The Barn

We got back into the van and started to drive again. We came across a barn on another road we ended up finding ourselves on. The closer we got to it, the clearer it became that there had been a fire. There was a little building to the left of the barn. Inside the smaller building we found a bedframe, some garbage, roof tiles, bottles, cans, a tire, and more. We could not determine if the building we were standing in was an extension of the barn or a small house. Again, the question of the story behind this haunting place consumed our thoughts.

Eventually we had to head back to our hometown. I turned on my maps app on my phone and set the GPS for home. As we went, we ended up in an area we were familiar with. My friend H and I had been going to a camp located on the road we found ourselves on. We passed the camp entrance and continued down a hill when H suddenly said, “did you see that car, pull over!” We pulled into a parking lot at a local church as H explained she saw a little car in the ravine. Once again, we got out of the van, and walked back to the ravine. We finally got to the place H saw the car but M and I couldn’t see it. We went a few steps closer and suddenly we saw it – a little, old, rusting, pale green car. I continued down the ravine to get a close up look at the car. The car had obviously been in a state of decay for several years. It was covered in rust, the paint had gone pale, and scraps of metal had pealed off and were scattered around on the ground. As the earth fought for its territory back, the car had sunk into the ground, becoming a haunting element of the landscape.
